Kitchen Safety for Thanksgiving

The Thanksgiving holiday is a time when family and friends come together to enjoy the food, fun and festivities.  However, Thanksgiving also poses many kitchen dangers that many people don’t think about while making their preparations.  Here are a few things that commonly start kitchen fires.  You’ll need to be aware of them to avoid a potential disaster.

  • Never leave a boiling pot on the stove unattended.  This is one of the most common causes of kitchen fires.
  • Don’t ever leave anything in the oven to cook while you’re away from your home.
  • Keep your oven clean.  Dirty ovens often result in a fire.
  • Never use non-microwavable dishes.  Additionally, when using your microwave pay close attention to the timer setting.  If you set the timer for two hours versus two minutes, that could cause the food item to catch fire.
  • Loose clothing and long sleeves can be deadly if they catch fire while you are cooking.
  • Know how to properly put out a fire.  Adding water to some types of fires will only make them worse.  Learn the different types of potential fires and how to extinguish them.
  • Keep grease, oil and any other combustible ingredient away from your stove.
  • Always keep a fire extinguisher in or around your kitchen.

There are many other kitchen safety tips that you should review before beginning your Thanksgiving preparations.  Nothing is more important than the safety of your family.
