Essential Things to Do Before Leaving For Vacation

Secure your home before heading out on vacation.

You booked your trip months ago and now it’s finally here! You are ready to re-charge your batteries and enjoy your vacation. We hate to burst your bubble, but there are a few more things you need to do before jet-setting on vacation. Luckily, we’ve put it all in a handy checklist so that you can be sure you’ve left your property safe and secure. Kick back and relax (once you’ve checked off these important tasks!).

Turn off your main water supply. Leaks happen. You don’t want them to happen while you’re out of town. Turn off your main water supply if you’re going to be away for a week or more.

Unplug electronics and appliances. Electronics sap energy even if they’re not on but are plugged in. Be sure to unplug your TV, microwave, toaster oven, and blender to save on your electricity bill. If you’re going to be away for some time, empty the fridge and freezer and turn them off, otherwise, you can leave those two appliances on!

Install timers on lights. You don’t want your property to attract unwanted attention. Leave timers on lights so that they turn on during the evening, making it look like someone is home.

Stop mail service. To thieves, a house with a full mailbox and scattered newspapers on the doorstep is a goldmine as it signals that no one is home. To prevent this, ask a friend to pick up your mail or have USPS hold it for you until you get back.

Check up on your insurance. Knowing what your insurance policies (car, home, renters) cover could save you both time and money if something does happen while you’re away.
