I’m Going on Vacation & Leaving My Home Vacation Now What?

It can be a little unnerving leaving your home vacant while being on vacation. After all, vacation is about taking time off and not having to worry about anything. The last thing you want to do is make a homeowners insurance or renters insurance claim when you return, so here are a few tips to help keep your home secure while you are on vacation.

  • Get some timers and put multiple lights on them. Have the timers staggered so the lights can help create the illusion that your home is occupied.
  • Get a motion-detection device for an outside light. Just in case someone approaches your home when it is dark, a motion activated light can help discourage them.
  • Make sure you stop your newspaper delivery if you have one. A stack of newspapers on your porch or in your driveway can be a green light to those looking for houses that are unoccupied.
  • Stop your mail delivery. A jam packed mailbox is also an indication that no one is home and can serve as an invitation.
  • Keep a radio on in the house. A radio uses very little electricity and if someone who is tempted to break in your home hears it, they may decide to move on.
