Natural Ways You Can Sleep Better Tonight!

Get better rest without medication by trying these natural sleep tips.

The sleep you’ve always dreamed of (get it?) might not be as far away as you thought. In our busy, hyper-connected world, it might feel all but impossible to suddenly stop the constant flow of activity and drift off to dreamland. But a little mindfulness and some different habits throughout your day can make it easy to fall – and actually stay! – asleep. Here are just a few natural ways you can sleep better tonight.

  • Create a routine. Our bodies come with a built-in sleep and wake clock. It’s called our circadian rhythm, and it can do more than just wake you up earlier than you wanted on a Saturday. Go to bed and get up at the same time every day, and you’ll find it easier to fall asleep and sleep more deeply. You can help your body set its biological clock by making sure you get some sunshine shortly after you wake up.
  • Watch what you drink. If you have trouble falling asleep, avoid caffeine after lunch. If you’re struggling with that afternoon slump, try green tea instead of coffee. It’s got less caffeine but will still give you a little boost. Also, watch your water intake in the evening. Drink enough so you don’t go to bed thirsty, but not so much you’re waking up for bathroom runs during the night.
  • Get moving – at the right time. Exercise improves your sleep quality, but you need time for your body to wind down after your workout. Try to get active no later than four hours before you plan to go to bed.
  • Power down. Devices like phones, laptops, and TVs emit a blue light that inhibits melatonin, the stuff your brain puts out to make you sleepy. Avoid technology an hour before bed for an easier time drifting off.
