Tips to Boost Mental Health

How to improve your mental health for National Mental Health Awareness Month.

May is a time of celebration, from Mother’s Day to Cinco de Mayo. It’s also Mental Health Awareness Month, which doesn’t get as much publicity as it should. We all know the importance of sustaining good physical health, but our mental health is just as important. This month, take the time to improve your mental health and encourage others around you to do the same.

  • Track gratitude and achievement with a journal. Write down three things that you’re grateful for every day, and three things you were able to accomplish.
  • Work your strengths. Do something you’re good at to build self-coincidence, then tackle the tougher task that you’ve been putting off all week.
  • Show some love to someone in your life. Close, quality relationships are key for a happy and healthy life. Nurture these relationships with time and love.
  • Snack on dark chocolate. Boost brainpower by treating yourself to a couple pieces of dark chocolate every few days. The flavanoids, caffeine, and theobromine in chocolate are thought to work together to improve alertness and mental skills.
  • Take time to laugh. Hang out with a funny friend, watch a comedy or check out cute videos online. Laughter helps to reduce anxiety and boosts your mood!
  • Unplug. Leave your smartphone at home for a day and disconnect from constant emails, alerts, and other interruptions. Spend time doing something fun, instead.
  • Take a hike. Get outside and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. Take a walk around your neighborhood or park to boost endorphins.
