Tips for Pest-Proofing Your Home

Protect your home from pests.

Mice, termites, and other creepy crawlies have no place in your home. While many homeowners work to protect their property from fire and natural disasters, pest-proofing can often fall by the wayside. To ensure that your home isn’t home to pests that can destroy your property from the inside out, here are a few tips to help.

Clean the house well – Keep a clean house because insects and bugs love dirty corners and dingy basements. Ensure that you stay on top of cleaning, tidy up spills when they happen, and vacuum regularly to remove crumbs of food.

Clean up the yard – Mice and voles love wood piles, unkempt gardens, and yard debris. Clear away the ground next to the house foundation, move wood piles as far from the house as possible, and clean up space under the deck to eliminate hiding spaces that could harbor pests.

Seal up possible entry points – Eliminate any chance of pests entering by sealing up cracks and holes in your home’s walls, windows, and doors. Use wire mesh to seal rodent holes so they cannot be chewed through, and use synthetic caulking for cracks around the plumbing.

Remove mice, don’t kill them – It can be tempting to set rat traps if you suspect there are some in your household. However, dead animals only attract insects and other animals. Instead, set a humane trap that captures the mouse alive so that you can return to the trap and let the mouse out away from your property.
