Ways for Businesses to Protect Company Data

Tips to prevent cyber breaches from threatening your company.

While you associate October with Halloween and pumpkin patches, this month is dedicated to being National Cyber Security Awareness Month. If you’re a business owner, you will know that the real spooks and nightmares come with cyber breaches and online security. If your business doesn’t have data on lockdown, then sensitive information could end up falling into the wrong hands. To help keep your business data safe, check out these tips.

Create a strong password. Teach your team how to create a strong password. It should consist of the following:

  • Ten or more characters
  • Upper and lower case letters
  • Numbers
  • Special characters

You should never write down passwords and you should change them seasonally. Remind employees not to use the same password across multiple accounts, too. One weak password could lead to a hacker gaining access to all of your files and documents.

Back up data. Get into the habit of backing up data regularly. If the worst does occur, you will need to be able to access important information to get back up and running. If you backed up data from last month or year, you could be missing out on valuable details.

Update software. Your anti-virus and anti-malware software is there to identify and remove harmful components from accessing your database. However, these software systems can only run efficiently if you keep them up to date!
